UPDATE: Chile prison fire kills scores of inmates
Topic: chile prison fire, bbc news

by Enrique Krause for the BBC's Biodun Iginla

The BBC's Gideon Long says it is believed prisoners set fire to mattresses

A fire in a prison in the Chilean capital Santiago has left at least 83 inmates dead, officials say.

The blaze broke out in the San Miguel prison at 0530 local time (0830 GMT), with television pictures showing smoke billowing from the building.

Hundreds of inmates were evacuated, with up to 14 prisoners said to have life-threatening injuries.

Reports said the fire broke out after a fight between rival gangs, who set mattresses on fire.

President Sebastian Pinera described the fire as a "hugely painful tragedy".

"We cannot guarantee the number of dead will not rise," he said.

Health Minister Jaime Manalich said this was the deadliest incident in the history of the Chilean prison service.

Frantic relatives

The BBC's Gideon Long in Santiago says the fire is now under control but there are chaotic scenes as relatives wait at the prison, with police trying to control the situation.

Many relatives said they still did not know the fate of their loved ones.

"We have been here for hours, and they haven't told us anything," one woman, named as Maria, said.

Relatives react to news of the fireThere has been confusion among relatives about who died

There was confusion earlier when officials read out partial lists of survivors, Reuters news agency said.

Some relatives reportedly screamed, assuming that inmates not mentioned on the list were dead.

The evacuated inmates are being held in a sports ground within the prison.

Our correspondent says local media are reporting that 1,900 inmates were in the jail, although it has a capacity for only about 700.

The situation prompted President Pinera to call for an end to overcrowding.

"We cannot keep living with a prison system which is absolutely inhumane," he said.

"We are going to speed up the process to ensure our country has a humane, dignified prison system that befits a civilised country."

There were reports that prison guards had initially prevented firefighters from entering the prison, which is in the south of the capital, La Tercera newspaper said.

The television pictures showed some prisoners waving their hands through the bars of the jail as relatives screamed at security forces to allow them in to help.

An investigation is under way into the cause of the blaze.

Chile has one of the highest per capita number of prisoners in Latin America.

tunku_newsbeast_12.8.10.jpgTina Brown Taps Talent ForNewsweek (WSJ / Speakeasy)
Tina Brown is keeping her plans for Newsweekclose to the vest, for now, but she is starting to put her stamp on its staff. Tuesday, Brown named Tunku Varadarajan, a writer-at-large for The Daily Beast and a veteran of Forbes,The Wall Street Journal, and The Times of London, to be editor of its international editions. She hired Dirk Barnett away from Condé Nast's Lucky magazine to beNewsweek's creative director late last month. NY Observer: Varadarajan has been promoted from The Daily Beast side of the family, where he was a national affairs correspondent. Like Brown, he is an Oxford alum and began his career in Great Britain. The position sounds similar to editor of NewsweekInternational, which Fareed Zakaria departed shortly after Newsweek's sale.

NYT Toughens Up Its Paywall (Reuters)
Martin Niesenholtz, head of digital at The New York Times, is pre-emptively cracking down on a tiny minority of hypothetical readers who might want to find ways around his wall, saying, "We will take great pains to make sure that the first-click-free policy isn't abused in any way." The paywall is designed to be porous: Readers coming in from some other site will always be able to read the article they're looking for. Except now, Nisenholtz seems to be backpedaling from that concept.

Tribune Lenders Targeting Zell (NY Post)
Tribune lenders were expected to file a lawsuit by midnight against real estate mogul Sam Zell, alleging that the leveraged buyout he engineered caused the business' collapse. Lawyers for the lenders will allege, sources said, that Zell's Tribune took on too much debt and made the company immediately insolvent. Any recoveries from the suit will be combined with any proceeds from related cases and will be placed in a litigation trust to be paid out to creditors.

HBO's Big Drama: Bewkes Floats Idea Of A Stand-Alone Service (NY Post)
HBO could one day be offered as a stand-alone service, not tied to any specific level of pay TV subscription, says Time Warner chief Jeff Bewkes. Such an a la carte offering could boost HBO's subscriber level above its stagnant 30 million. The 38-year-old channel has been a part of cable packages since it started, but with platforms like Netflix, Google TV, and Apple TV gaining in popularity and overall cable subscriptions falling, Bewkes is putting cable on notice that he has other options.

Moonves To Google TV: Pay Up (Mediaweek)
According to CBS CEO Les Moonves, Google TV is not going to get his networks' content "for zero dollars," and his plan is to approach the product cautiously. "Google TV is very interesting," Moonves said Tuesday during a keynote interview at the UBS Global Media & Communications Conference. "I'm not sure what it is. I'm not sure what it will do to our business. I know Mr. [Google chairman and CEO Eric] Schmidt thinks we have our heads in the sand, but I beg to differ."

Gourmet Live Opens Shop (minOnline)
Since Condé Nast revived the Gourmet brand in free iPad app Gourmet Live, the plan has always been to find incremental new revenue through a combination of free and paid content. Yesterday, an app upgrade added a new GourmetLive Store that sells special content collections, as well as previous weekly issue updates. A new tab in the Library section of Gourmet Live showcases a "continuing iteration with new collections, new ways of purchasing content, and more," the editors write.

You, Too, Can Own A Piece Of The Onion (CJR)
The Onion has decided to both get out of the print business and double down on print at the same time. The popular satirical newspaper and Web site has made the decision to franchise its print edition out to local partners. Franchisees will pay a weekly fee to license Onion content; they'll sell their own ads, pay to print and distribute the papers, and keep the profits from the ads they sell. In turn, The Onion expands its readership and drives more readers to its Web site.

Yahoo! CEO: Don't Judge Me Until 2012 (Forbes)
Carol Bartz has been CEO of Yahoo! for almost two years now, long enough for some to declare her ineffective and call for her to be replaced. But to hear Bartz tell it, not only is it premature to demand her resignation now -- it will still be premature 12 months from now. In a keynote interview at the UBS Media & Communications Conference, Bartz noted that she has said from the start that an overhaul of Yahoo!'s technology operations is only now nearing completion.

Howard Stern Slams Sirius CFO: 'I'm Not Taking A F___ing Pay Cut' (The Wrap)
Howard Stern went on a long, expletive-laced rant on his Sirius Satellite Radio show Tuesday, slamming the company's chief financial officer for saying the shock jock -- whose five-year, $500 million contract is up at the end of the month -- is not involved in contract negotiations and would have to take a pay cut to stay on the air. "I am not taking a f___ing pay cut," Stern said. "Why would I have to take a pay cut?…Who is this guy to say this in public?"

SPJ Urges AP To Continue Its Paid Internship Program (Poynter)
The Associated Press says it will decide this month whether it will drop its internship program, where interns are paid at the rate of entry-level employees. The Society of Professional Journalists, however, is urging the AP to look elsewhere for desired budget cuts. "Experience has shown that internship programs are essential investments in helping identify and train top talent for future roles in our business," SPJ president Hagit Limor said.

Corrections: Basic Journalistic Hygiene (NPR)
One of the surest ways for a news organization to keep and gain credibility, writes NPR ombudsman Alicia Shepard, is to have an easy-to-use mechanism for reporting mistakes and a quick process for correcting them. It's inevitable that even the most thorough news organizations will make mistakes. The question is how they handle them. Today, as more people get much -- if not most -- of their news online, there needs to be a common standard for reporting and correcting errors.

Here, then, is a sampling of 10 insights from this year's "Mavens."

Salvation! Newsweek May Ditch Dingy Digs This Spring (NY Observer)
Newsweek staffers were rejoicing yesterday evening, as a memo from owner Sidney Harman told them that they may not have to work out of their new, but deeply unliked, offices at 7 Hanover Square for long. As soon as March 30, 2011, Harman wrote, it "may be possible to accommodate the combinedNewsweek and The Daily Beast operations at the world-class 18th Street IAC building." The IAC building would be Newsweek's fifth location in less than two years.

MasterCard.com Taken Down By Wikileaks-Supporting Hackers?

MasterCard Statement Blames "Heavy Traffic"

1 comment Wednesday, December 8, 2010

MasterCard.com is down. It's reportedly been down for hours now.  It would appear that supporters of Wikileaks (hackers) are taking credit, as MasterCard stopped processing payments for Wikileaks support.

Alan Bentley, SVP International of global security firm, Lumension tells WebProNews, "The hacker attack on MasterCard’s website following its move to block payments to WikiLeaks certainly shouldn't surprise anyone. WikiLeaks has a strong following amongst the hacker community and it was inevitable that there was going to be some form of backlash."

Of course MasterCard isn't the only company to refuse service to Wikileaks. "Many disgruntled hacktivists will be seeking revenge on behalf of the whistleblowing website and it is highly likely that this will be the first in a series of attacks on businesses such as Amazon, PayPal, Visa and Swiss Bank, all of which withdrew services to Wikileaks over recent days," says Bentley. "The Wikileaks saga is undoubtedly set to continue for some time and all organisations involved will want to beef up their security efforts in a bid to protect themselves from the wrath of the hactivist community."

MasterCard Down

Actually reports indicate that some of these other sites have suffered attacks, though MasterCard seems to be the only one down at the moment. MasterCard just released the following statement:

MasterCard is experiencing heavy traffic on its external corporate website – MasterCard.com. We are working to restore normal speed of service.

There is no impact whatsoever on our cardholders ability to use their cards for secure transactions.

No mention of any hacking.

It's not just hackers whose mouths were left with a bad taste when these companies refused service to Wikileaks. Industry analyst Jeff Jarvis had some strong words about it.

Bentley is probably right in that we probably haven't seen the last of such attacks. Pissing off hackers is bound to have its consequences.

Chile prison fire 'kills dozens of inmates'
Topic: chile prison fire, bbc news

by Enrique Krause for the BBC's Biodun Iginla

A fire in a prison in the Chilean capital Santiago has left at least 81 inmates dead, officials say.Map

The blaze broke out in the San Miguel prison at 0530 local time (0830 GMT), with television pictures showing smoke billowing from the building.

Local media said hundreds of inmates had been evacuated and that at least 19 were injured, some with serious burns.

Reports said the fire broke out after a fight between rival gangs, who set mattresses on fire.

The BBC's Gideon Long in Santiago says the fire is now under control but there are chaotic scenes as relatives arrive at the prison.

He says local media are reporting that 1,900 inmates were in the prison, although it has a capacity for only about 700.

An investigation is under way into the cause of the blaze.

There were reports that prison guards had initially prevented firefighters from entering the prison, La Tercera newspaper said.

US housing doldrums 'to last until 2013'

A foreclosure sign outside a property in Las VegasThe survey suggests US citizens are increasingly willing to walk away from their mortgages

by Judith Stein, BBC News Financial Analyst, for the BBC's Biodun Iginla

Some 58% of Americans expect the US housing market to stay depressed for two or more years, a survey has found.

In the survey, 48% of respondents said they would consider walking away from their mortgage if they were in negative equity - up from 41% since May.

The findings by property websites Trulia and RealtyTrac come as house prices have begun falling again.

They suggest the market may face a new wave of mortgage defaults as Americans lose respect for scandal-hit banks.

The attorneys general of all 50 US states are carrying out a joint investigation into foreclosures - the repossession of US homes by mortgage lenders - after it emerged that unqualified "robo-signers" had been used to produce fraudulent documentation to present to US courts.

"As a result of the recent robo-signing debacle, half of US adults expressed that they now have less faith in mortgage lenders, banks and the government," the two companies said in a statement presenting their report.

The two real estate websites themselves were even more pessimistic than their survey respondents, predicting that the housing market would recover only in 2014.

Rick Sharga of RealtyTrac - which provides an online forum for purchasing repossessed properties - said he expects a surge in foreclosures into the New Year as many existing adjustable-rate mortgages are about to reset to a higher interest rate.

BREAKING NEWS ALERT: U.S. Ends Push to Renew Israeli Freeze on Settlements
Topic: israeli-palestinian conflict, na

by Nasra Ismail and Biodun Iginla, BBC News. Nasra reported from Jerusalem.

After three weeks

of negotiating with the Israeli government,
the Obama administration has given up its effort to persuade
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to renew an expired freeze
on the construction of Jewish settlements, two senior
officials said on Tuesday.

The decision leaves Middle East peace talks in limbo, with
the Palestinians refusing to resume talks absent a settlement
freeze and the United States struggling to find another
formula to bring them back to the table.
