Word 'bomb' on mirror prompts flight diversion
Topic: Continental Express flight, suza WASHINGTON – A Continental Express flight from Houston to the Washington, D.C., area was diverted Wednesday morning when someone discovered the word "bomb" written on a bathroom mirror inside the plane, U.S. officials said. A search of the plane after it landed in Greensboro, N.C., turned up no explosives. The officials who described what was written on the mirror spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongoing. Earlier the Transportation Security Administration had said only that a threatening message was written on a bathroom mirror, but gave no details of the message. FBI agents, Greensboro's police bomb squad, and bomb-sniffing dogs owned by the Piedmont Triad International Airport Authority swept through the plane and its cargo and found no explosives, airport executive director Ted Johnson said. Every passenger was questioned by the FBI, Johnson said. "Somebody did it but we've got to draw the right clues to the right person," Johnson said. Amy Thoreson, an FBI spokeswoman in Charlotte, said agents continued their investigation and had no immediate plans to file criminal charges. Agents released the jet back to the airline. The flight took off again for Dulles International Airport in Virginia more than six hours after landing in North Carolina, Continental spokeswoman Christen David said in an e-mailed statement. Flight 3006, operated by regional carrier ExpressJet for Continental Airlines Inc., was when it was directed to land at the airport near Greensboro "out of an abundance of caution," the TSA said. The plane was met by law enforcement officers after taxiing to a remote area of the airfield. The Embraer 145 regional jet carried 45 passengers and three crew members, Continental and ExpressJet said. The plane landed without incident, the airlines and Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Arlene Salac said. "Continental and ExpressJet are cooperating with local authorities," David said. _____

NY wants man who spread HIV locked up indefinitely
Topic: aids virus, aids, * hiv BUFFALO, N.Y. – A sex offender who infected at least 13 women with the AIDS virus should be locked up indefinitely under a civil law meant to keep the most dangerous offenders out of communities even after they complete prison sentences, the state said Wednesday. The attorney general's office described 33-year-old Nushawn Williams in court papers as a mentally disturbed, sex-obsessed drug user who was unruly and sometimes violent during his 12 years in prison and would likely infect more women if set free. He pleaded guilty in 1998 to charges of statutory rape and reckless endangerment after his behavior set off a panic in the small western New York town of Jamestown, where the dreadlocked convict was known as "Face" to the young, sometimes drug-addicted women and girls he charmed for sex. Williams said nothing Wednesday during the first court appearance in the state's efforts to have him confined. Under a 3-year-old statute, the state can lock up a sex offender indefinitely if it proves the person has a mental abnormality and is likely to offend again. Williams, whose criminal sentence ended April 13, would be held at a medium-security psychiatric facility, with his case reviewed yearly. "I'm just waiting for him to come home. I feel like he did his time," his mother, Denise Williams, said after watching Wednesday's hearing in state Supreme Court. "Ain't nothing wrong with him." In 1997, before Williams was charged, health and police authorities took the unusual step of making his HIV status public to try to stop further spread of the virus by Williams' partners — the youngest of whom was 13 — to others. As lines for HIV testing stretched out the door of clinics in Jamestown, Williams said he did not recall being told he had the virus while in jail in 1996. He told a reporter in 1999 that he'd had sex with 200 to 300 partners before his arrest. A psychologist's report filed as part of the civil confinement efforts describes Williams as a high school dropout who has never been formally employed, is preoccupied with sex and cares so little about others that he threw his urine on another inmate, one of 21 disciplinary offenses for which he was cited in prison. He told the psychologist he did not intend to spread HIV to his partners. "I was not trying to give them the highly infectious disease. I was selling drugs and moving too fast," Williams told Dr. Jacob Hadden of the state Office of Mental Health during a March interview at Wende Correctional Facility. "If I used protection, I wouldn't have it, either." He said he would "stay in church" to ensure he doesn't offend again and planned to write three books about his life when freed. While prison records list him as Jewish, he said that was a ploy to get different food. He said he claimed to be Rastafarian when he first arrived in prison so he wouldn't have to cut his hair. If released, Williams, who also goes by the name Shyteek Johnson, could offend again without the community knowing, Hadden said. Williams takes medication and has no symptoms, the report said. "Mr. Johnson was having sexual intercourse several times per day and with many different partners. He targeted vulnerable individuals who were underage and/or drug addicted and used charm and coercion to secure sexual contact," Hadden wrote after the three-hour interview. Two of the women who contracted HIV later had children born with the virus. Daniel Grasso, the lawyer assigned to represent Williams just before the hearing, said the court would have to weigh Williams' needs against the risk to society in deciding whether he should remain locked up. He could also be placed on a highly supervised parole that would include treatment and monitoring, Grasso said. "He's really stressed," his wife, Nina Williams, said after the hearing. "Everyone was waiting for him to come home. He was ready to get on with his life, start over." A hearing is scheduled for May 6 to determine whether there is probable cause to hold Williams until a trial that would determine if he has a mental abnormality. The process could take months. The state has civilly confined 123 sex offenders since the law was enacted.

Getaway for Mexican elite now cartel battleground
Topic: mexican drug cartels, enrique kr CUERNAVACA, Mexico – A battle for control of a brutal cartel has brought the drug war closer to the heart of Mexico, terrifying this city of bougainvilleas, swimming pools and yearlong warm weather that have made it a popular retreat for the capital's elite and U.S. retirees. Cuernavaca, nicknamed the "City of Eternal Spring," has erupted in violence since a gunbattle at a luxury apartment building here killed a notorious drug kingpin, unleashing the fight for control of his organization. Bodies have been hung from overpasses, dumped outside police headquarters or left on busy streets with their faces skinned. Mysterious e-mails have warned people to stay home after nightfall and to avoid driving the kind of pickup trucks and SUVs favored by drug lords, lest they become caught up in a deadly dispute between rival gangs. Schools and offices sent students and workers home early when the messages first circulated nearly two weeks ago. Nighttime classes in at least one private university were canceled. Bars and restaurants shut their doors, some for two days. Business has still not picked up. A handful of tourists strolled through the aisles at a crafts market this week, where about half the stands remained closed. "What they wanted was to frighten people and that's exactly what they did," said Jose Luis Rodriguez, a silver-jewelry vendor who shut down his stand and rushed home last week after hearing about the warning. He said his sales have dropped by more than half. "There is still fear that someone could come and throw a grenade or open fire," Rodriguez said, checking out a front-page newspaper photo of a man who had been shot in the face. Cuernavaca, a city of 350,000 with mild weather and rich vegetation just 40 miles (65 kilometers) south of Mexico City, has been a favorite retreat for the rich and powerful since the days of the Aztec Empire. It is known for its charming Spanish-colonial downtown and for posh homes with lush gardens and swimming pools. The city also has attracted powerful drug lords, whose wealth has quietly blended in amid the gated mansions and upscale apartment buildings. Most law-abiding residents have seemed content to ignore rumors of drug traffickers living in their midst. That fragile tranquility was shattered when marines raided an apartment complex in December, killing kingpin Arturo Beltran Leyva during a two-hour shootout while residents cowered in the gym. Authorities say his brother, Hector Beltran Leyva, has been fighting for control of the cartel against Edgar Valdez Villarreal, a U.S.-born man known as "La Barbie" who has become one of Mexico's most elusive drug suspects. Hector Beltran Leyva reportedly signed one of the threatening e-mails that was distributed among city residents. Authorities have remained silent about the authenticity of the e-mail, even as local television stations have taken it seriously. The Juarez 4 nightclub was one of the few establishments that opened the night the e-mail circulated, on April 16. Nobody showed up. Last weekend was only a little better; about a third of the normal clientele came to the two-story club adorned with pirate mannequins hanging from ropes and sitting on barrels. "This is a city that depends on tourism and what violence has done is collapse our economy," said club owner Andres Remis, president of the Cuernavacan Nightclubs and Bars Association. "The only thing that we can do is to wait for one of the groups to win or for the army to win." More than 50 people have been killed this year in Cuernavaca's gang battles. The federal government insists it is steadily wiping out the once-powerful Beltran Leyva cartel. Two of the Beltran Leyva brothers are behind bars. Last week, troops captured Jose Gerardo Alvarez, another purported leader of the gang who had a $2 million U.S. bounty on his head. Troops fought Alvarez and his men in a wealthy neighborhood on the outskirts of Mexico City, leaving three people dead. The battle brought closer to the capital the kind of bloody conflicts that have often rattled states on the northern border and the country's two coasts. Authorities say Alvarez, known as "El Indio," was behind much of the fight for control of the Beltran Leyva cartel, both in Cuernavaca and the Pacific resort city of Acapulco to the southwest. The U.S. State Department hailed his capture, saying Alvarez has overseen major deals involving the trafficking of crystal methamphetamine and other drugs between Mexico, Central America, South America and the United States. President Felipe Calderon counts the downfall of the Beltran Leyva brothers as one of the biggest accomplishments of his military-led offensive against drug traffickers. Calderon has deployed tens of thousands of troops and federal police across the country since taking office in December 2006, a campaign the U.S. has backed with training and equipment through a $1.3 billion aid package. Drug-gang violence has since soared though, claiming nearly 23,000 lives throughout Mexico, with Cuernavaca becoming the latest front. "We hadn't seen this violence before," said Dawn Housand, a 60-year-old Boston native who moved to Cuernavaca more than 10 years ago looking for a quiet place to live. "I don't have the money to move. If I did, I would leave." _____ Associated Press Writer Oswald Alonso contributed to this report.

GOP to abandon blockade of banking regulation bill
Topic: wall street regulations, banking WASHINGTON – Republicans set the stage Wednesday for removing their blockade against legislation to tighten regulations on Wall Street, saying they would try instead to change the bill on the Senate floor. Earlier in the day, Republican senators had blocked the beginning of floor debate for a third straight day, contending they needed more time to try to work out compromises with Democrats in private talks. Sen. Richard Shelby, the top Republican on the Banking Committee, said he had received assurances that Democrats would adjust the bill to address GOP concerns that it would perpetuate bailouts of banks. But he said he and committee chairman Chris Dodd had given up finding common ground on other provisions, including Dodd's consumer protection language that Republicans say goes too far. "Now that those bipartisan negotiations have ended, it is my hope that the majority's avowed interest in improving this legislation on the Senate floor is genuine and the partisan gamesmanship is over," said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell. Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine said the negotiations had addressed her concerns on how to deal with financial firms deemed "too big to fail." And she said that with the Dodd-Shelby talks over she would now support sending the bill to the floor for debate. Dodd said he and Shelby had been engaged in productive talks. "But I cannot agree to his desire to weaken consumer protections given the enormous abuses we have seen." Democrats tried three times to begin debate on the bill only to be thwarted by Republican opposition. Democrats branded the Republicans as Wall Street allies. But Republicans said they were merely trying to secure changes to make the bill more bipartisan. Republicans had already begun to drop their complaints that the Democrats' legislation would perpetuate bailouts, and had shifted their criticism to the consumer protection provision. The Senate Democrats' bill would create a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau within the Federal Reserve that would have power to police transactions between institutions that provide financial services and their customers. Republicans say the bill would have unintended circumstances that could ensnare small business people for merely extending credit to their customers. By a 56-42 vote Wednesday, Democrats failed for a third time to get the necessary 60 votes to move the legislation to the Senate floor for debate. Democrats had threatened to keep the Senate in session into the night and were preparing to hold more votes testing Republican unity.

Greek financial crisis sends markets plunging
Topic: greece bailout, bbc news, biodun LONDON – Greece's deepening financial crisis sent stock markets and the euro reeling again on Wednesday after its debt was slashed to junk status, fanning fears of a default. A fierce global equities sell-off was sparked on Tuesday after ratings agency Standard & Poor's cut Greek debt to junk status, while a downgrade to Portugal also stoked concerns about a widening eurozone crisis. As the European Union announced that it would hold an emergency summit on Greece, the Frankfurt stock market plummeted 1.93 percent and Paris plunged 2.16 percent in late morning deals. London fell 0.98 percent, one day after suffering its biggest one-day loss since November. Lisbon tumbled 5.56 percent and Madrid fell by 2.72 percent, while Athens was down 1.69 percent after massive losses in recent days. "Any hope that the Greek issue was finally coming under control took a huge blow yesterday with the country's sovereign debt being downgraded to junk," said IG Markets analyst Ben Potter. The news sparked "a quick run of selling on equity markets across the globe that was reminiscent of the chaos of 2008," he added. The debt drama also rattled Asian markets, with Tokyo slumping 2.57 percent and Hong Kong diving 1.26 percent in value. Wall Street shed 1.90 percent overnight, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average finishing under the symbolic level of 11,000 points, as Greece and Portugal downgrades reverberated across the globe. "The downgrading of Portuguese and Greek debt has spooked investors, as there is a very real fear that other European countries could be downgraded too," said analyst Owen Ireland at ODL Securities. In the foreign exchange market on Wednesday, the European single currency hit a new one-year dollar low. The euro plunged to 1.3143 dollars -- a low last seen in April 2009 -- as traders fretted over a debt crisis that could spread to other fiscally-challenged nations like Spain, Italy and Ireland. In bond market trade on Wednesday, the yield on 10-year Greek sovereign bonds soared to 11.076 percent, the highest 10-year level ever recorded in the eurozone, after 9.73 percent on Tuesday. "The S&P downgrades to Portugal and Greece brought a fresh bout of fears to equity and credit markets alike, with concerns over contagion effects continuing to rise," said analyst Deidre Ryan at Goodbody's stockbrokers. "Along with the spike in peripheral euro-area bond yields, the euro also continues to weaken, falling below the 1.32-dollar level to its lowest level in a year." Reeling from a debt and public deficit crisis, Greece has appealed for emergency loans totalling 45 billion euros (60 billion dollars) from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. The funds would be made availaible on condition that Greece implemented tough austerity measures, currently the subject of talks with the EU and the IMF. The IMF is considering raising its Greek financial aid by 10 billion euros (13 billion dollars), having already offered 15 billion as part of the emergency loans, the Financial Times reported Wednesday. In response the latest news, the European Union has called an emergency summit on Greece, with eurozone leaders set to meet next month. EU President Herman Van Rompuy said leaders from the 16 nations using the single currency would meet in Brussels "by around May 10" to try to agree how to set up a massive rescue operation. Speaking in Tokyo, Van Rompuy said there was "no question" of Greece defaulting. GFT analyst David Morrison said that German Chancellor Angela Merkel would not want to hold the EU summit prior to this date. "Of course it is the day after the German regional elections and Angela Merkel dare not OK a Greek bailout before then because she will get hammered," Morrison told AFP. "But the likelihood is that the bond markets will force quicker action," he added. Across in Athens on Wednesday, strikes and protests erupted as its crisis-hit economy reeled from another scathing downgrade of its debt and the stock exchange took emergency measures to deter speculators. Amidst a growing recession, a general strike has been called for May 5 against austerity cuts that the government is enforcing to slash the rampant public deficit and debt worth nearly 300 billion euros (399 billion dollars). Morrison added: "One thing is for sure -- Greece needs considerably more than the 45 billion euros on offer. "Having heard that restructuring was not even being considered yesterday, the market has jumped forward and is now looking at outright default." Oil prices also sank on Wednesday, shaken by the Greek crisis and the strong US currency, which makes dollar-priced crude more expensive for foreign buyers.
