(Disclosure: My lovely daughter, Maya Iginla, will be graduating June 12, in the Class of 2010)

To the Carleton Community,

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we are delighted and honored to announce that Steven G. Poskanzer, the president of the State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz since 2003, will become Carleton's 11th President on August 2, 2010. We would like to invite the entire Carleton community to meet and hear from Steve at a gathering in the Sayles-Hill Great Space today at 3 p.m.

Steve impressed both the presidential search committee and the members of the Board with his wit, intellect, and passion for students and the liberal arts. He will succeed Robert A. Oden Jr., who has so ably served as the College's President for the past eight years and announced his retirement in September 2009.

Steve brings with him a formidable background as a higher education administrator and experience at some of the top higher education institutions in the country. An undergraduate student at Princeton, he graduated cum laude in 1980 before earning his J.D. degree from Harvard in 1983. A noted expert in higher education law, Steve is most well known for his book, Higher Education Law: The Faculty. He was chief of staff to the president at the University of Chicago for four years before moving to the SUNY system in 1997, where he served in various capacities before his move to the New Paltz campus. His father, Charles, taught at SUNY-Cortland for 41 years, and Steve has followed in his footsteps by teaching at SUNY-New Paltz while serving as President. He is extremely popular with students on his current campus and we are confident current and former Carls will identify with Steve quickly.

The search process was an intensive one that included many rounds of in-person meetings with prospective candidates, multiple reference checks, and on-site visits with the finalists at or near their own campuses. The search included a series of meetings on the Carleton campus with a small but representative group of faculty, staff, students and trustees, and culminated in a vote of the entire Board of Trustees expressing overwhelming support for Steve as Carleton's next President. The search committee was impressed with the quality and diverse nature of the entire applicant pool, but Steve's intellectual vitality, energy, and commitment to the liberal arts stood out at every stage of the process.

Learn more about Steve at http://go.carleton.edu/announcement - the web site includes a video of Steve sharing his thoughts on Carleton, his curriculum vitae, photos, and the news release announcing his appointment.

We would like to thank everyone involved in the search process, and especially the search committee, which recommended Steve unanimously to the Board of Trustees. We also salute President Oden for setting the stage for what we sincerely believe will be a smooth transition and exciting time in Carleton's history.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome Steve, his wife, Dr. Jane Nofer Poskanzer, a clinical child psychologist who specializes in the diagnosis of autism and related disabilities, and their children, Jill and Craig, to the Carleton community.

Jack Eugster ’67
Chair, Carleton Board of Trustees
Co-Chair, Presidential Search Committee

Please share your Rob Oden stories & reflections.

During his eight years at Carleton, President Robert A. Oden Jr. has influenced and touched our lives in many ways.  In commemoration of his retirement, we invite you to share a personal reflection or favorite story about Carleton's tenth president, Rob Oden. These will be collected and published in a memory book and presented during an all-campus celebration on May 28.

Please submit your story (fewer than 250 words) or captioned photo by Friday, April 30 to memories@carleton.edu.  Be sure to include your name with your submission. Due to space limitations, submissions may be edited for length, and not every submission may be included in the final publication.

Thank you for your assistance in this SURPRISE for President Oden. Please contact Sarah Forster in the Office of Stewardship at sforster@carleton.edu with any questions.
